Articulation at Barstow Community College

Articulation at Barstow Community College

What is Articulation?

Articulation is basically a fancy word for “transfer-friendly classes.” It means the courses you take at Barstow Community College can count the same as similar courses at a university. This way, you’re meeting university requirements while still here at BCC.

Sometimes, a class might transfer over just as an elective. That means the units will move with you, but the class may not cover general ed or major requirements.

The good news? BCC has articulation agreements with lots of schools, including:
✅ University of California (UC)
✅ California State University (CSU)
✅ Private and out-of-state colleges & universities

These agreements are designed to make your transfer as smooth as possible so you can stay on track with your goals!

What's an MOUs?

An MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) is just a signed partnership between BCC and a four-year university. Think of it as a deal that gives you some extra perks when you transfer!

Some of the benefits might include:
✅ Application fee waivers (save $$ on apps!)
✅ Guaranteed admission to certain schools/programs
✅ Discounted tuition or special scholarships
✅ …and other transfer-friendly advantages

Be sure to check out the MOUs below to see exactly what benefits are available for each university.

What are Transfer Guides?

Transfer Guides are like roadmaps for your transfer journey. They show you the courses a four-year university requires and the matching classes you can take right here at BCC.

They’re super helpful for staying on track - but remember, requirements can change! Always double-check with a counselor to make sure you’re meeting everything you need for admission and transfer.

What is ASSIST and what does it do?

  • ASSIST provides the most accurate and up-to-date information about student transfer in California; it is the official repository of articulation agreements for California’s public colleges and universities. Articulation shows how courses completed at one college or university can be used to satisfy requirements at another.
  • ASSIST lists courses that fulfill university admission requirements, major and general education requirements, and university graduation requirements. It also lists transferable elective courses that can be used to reach the number of units needed to transfer to a university.
  • ASSIST does not contain information about private, out-of-state, or international colleges or universities.

ASSIST does not take the place of a counselor on your campus. It is intended to help students and counselors work together to establish an appropriate path toward transferring to a public California university.

In addition, to the public universities, Barstow Community College has articulation agreements

Transfer Guarantees

The Student Transfer Achievement Reform (STAR) Act (Senate Bill 1440, California Education Code sections 66746-66749) guarantees admission to a California State University (CSU) campus for any community college student who completes an "associate degree for transfer", a newly established variation of the associate degrees traditionally offered at a California community college.

To pursue this special degree rather than a traditional AA or AS degree, you should meet with a counselor to develop an education plan that puts you on the path toward the ADT degree. Learn more on our ADT page.

To learn more about which ADT's at Barstow Community College are deemed similar at the California State University (CSU) system, click HERE!

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have an excellent academic track record. While only about 17 percent of black undergraduate students attend an HBCU, more than 28 percent of African-Americans who receive a bachelor’s degrees obtain them from an HBCU.  These colleges and universities are also leading institutions in awarding degrees to African-American students in the life sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and engineering programs.

Guaranteed Transfer Admission

Thanks to an agreement signed March 17, 2015 between the California Community Colleges and several HBCUs, California community college students who complete certain academic requirements are guaranteed transfer to a participating HBCU.

California community college transfer students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are guaranteed admission to HBCU partner schools using either of the following two options: (1) complete a minimum of 30 UC or CSU units (2) complete a transfer level-associate degree (ADT) using the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education Breadth pattern. There may be additional prerequisites or other requirements for certain majors.

Additional program benefits for students under the agreement include priority consideration for housing, consideration for transfer scholarships for students with a 3.2 or higher GPA, and pre-admission advising. Learn more about the agreement by clicking HERE!

If you are interested in transferring to a University of California campus, then the Transfer Admissions Guarantee (TAG) Program may be right for you. The TAG program offers students guaranteed admission to one of the six participating UC Campuses (Davis, Irvine, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz).

By participating in TAG, you may receive early review of your academic records, early admission notification and specific guidelines about major preparation and general education coursework.

The TAG matrix provides a list of participating campuses and campus-specific requirements to qualify.

How to pursue the UC TAG

  1. Use the UC Transfer Admission Planner to complete the TAG application, and review it with your community college counselor and/or UC Campus TAG adviser. You’ll need to submit it Sept. 1-30th for the fall term and May 1-31 for the winter/spring term (only UC Merced and UC Riverside participate in the winter/spring TAG program).
  2. Fulfill all remaining coursework and GPA requirements in your TAG agreement.
  3. Fill out the application for admission to UC and submit it Nov. 1-30.
