The Program provides valuable work experience with paid employment opportunities on campus that enable you to meet Welfare-To-Work/GAIN activity requirements while pursuing an educational program at Barstow Community College.
What are the goals and benefits of CalWORKs Work Study?
Goals
- Provide you with work experience to increase your marketability upon completion of an educational program
- Provide you with an additional source of income within the requirements of the CalWORKs program

What are the eligibility requirements for CalWORKs work study?
You must be:
- A CalWORKs adult cash aid recipient in good standing with the county
- Enrolled at Barstow Community College with an approved educational plan
- At least a second semester student at Barstow Community College
- Enrolled in at least 6 units
- In good academic standing with a cumulative 2.0 GPA
- In compliance with academic, conduct and performance standards required by the CalWORKs program for parents and Barstow Community College

CalWORKs Work Study Program Overview
The CalWORKs Work Study Program is an opportunity to hire work study students with 75% of the student's wage paid by the CalWORKs work study program and remaining 25% paid by Federal Work Study or the hiring department/organization. For students receiving Federal Work Study, this allows a student's federal work study grant to receive minimal use, essentially stretching the grant, most times allowing it to last throughout the fiscal year.

What are the benefits of CalWORKs Work-Study?
- 75% of the student’s wage is paid by CalWORKs, the other 25% is covered by Federal Work Study or the hiring department.
- CalWORKs Work Study students receive Work Study Readiness counseling sessions to prepare for Work Study positions.
- We focus on developing a student’s employability skills through the ACES framework.
- Students are required to participate in a Work Experience learning class.
- An excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable, hands-on experience, while still participating in an educational training program.
