General Education (GE) Requirements
Your Education. Your Goals. Your Future.
At Barstow Community College, we are committed to helping you achieve your educational goals, whether you plan to earn an associate degree, transfer to a four-year university, or explore your academic options. General Education (GE) courses provide a strong academic foundation while helping you develop essential skills in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.
Choosing the appropriate GE pattern is an important academic decision. Selecting courses without understanding your degree or transfer requirements could result in unnecessary coursework or delay your graduation or transfer. Barstow Community College offers two General Education (GE) patterns designed to support different educational pathways.
• Transfer GE Pattern: Cal-GETC
The California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC) is designed for students planning to transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) campus.
Cal-GETC provides a unified pathway to complete lower-division general education requirements across both university systems. It may also satisfy general education requirements at certain out-of-state, online, or private universities, depending on the institution. Important: Completing Cal-GETC does not guarantee admission to the university. Some majors and universities have additional requirements. Meet with a counselor to ensure your coursework aligns with your intended transfer institution and major.
•Local GE Pattern
The Local General Education (GE) Pattern is designed for students pursuing applicable associate degrees at Barstow Community College. This pattern provides a foundation in essential academic disciplines while helping students fulfill the general education requirements for their selected associate degree programs.
If your goal is to earn an associate degree, the Local GE pattern may be the appropriate pathway. However, requirements vary depending on your degree and educational goals.
Students considering a future transfer should consult a counselor before selecting this pattern.
•Explore Your Academic Pathway
Every student's educational journey is different. The GE pattern you choose should align with your degree, intended major, transfer destination, and academic goals.
Review our degree programs and consult the current Barstow Community College Catalog for detailed GE requirements and approved courses.
