Academic Renewal (Without Course Repetition)
Academic Renewal is a process intended to support student success by facilitating transfer, degree, and certificate completion, and by assisting students in removal from academic probation or academic dismissal. Academic Renewal allows eligible students to alleviate the negative impact of prior substandard academic performance at Barstow Community College without repeating coursework.
Students seeking Academic Renewal must meet with a counselor to complete the Academic Renewal Petition . The completed petition and any required supporting documentation (such as official transcripts from other institutions) must be submitted to the Admissions and Records Office for review.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Academic Renewal, a student must meet all of the following criteria:
- At least one semester must have elapsed since the coursework to be disregarded was completed.
- After the semester in which the coursework to be disregarded was completed, the student must have successfully completed a minimum of 12 consecutive semester units with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at a regionally accredited institution.
- A maximum of 30 semester units may be disregarded under the Academic Renewal policy.
- Academic Renewal may be granted more than once; however, the total number of units disregarded may not exceed 30 semester units.
- Pre-college level English, ESL, and mathematics coursework does not count toward the 30-unit maximum.
Coursework Limitations
- Only coursework with grades of “D” or “F” may be considered for Academic Renewal.
- Courses that have already been excluded from GPA calculation through course repetition are not eligible for Academic Renewal.
- Coursework used to satisfy requirements for a degree or certificate that has already been awarded is not eligible for Academic Renewal.
- Coursework from other regionally accredited colleges or universities may be used to demonstrate academic ability.
Transcript Notation and Important Information
- All coursework will remain legible on the student’s permanent academic record.
- The student’s permanent record will be annotated to clearly indicate that courses approved for Academic Renewal:
- Are excluded from GPA calculation, and
- May not satisfy degree, certificate, or general education requirements.
- Academic Renewal is irreversible once granted.
- Academic Renewal approved at Barstow Community College does not guarantee that other colleges or universities will recognize or honor the action.
