BARSTOW, CA- Barstow Community College (BCC) has officially welcomed back Viking Athletes and the Athletics Staff as part of the BCC Safe Return to Campus plan.
Currently, the college is only open to people who have been cleared to be on campus, with visitors not yet allowed. In preparing for a safe return, new policies and procedures were developed in collaboration with the BCC Safe Return Task Force, and a special plan for Athletics was created by the Athletics Team, following official guidelines.
To learn more about what this feels like and the preparations that went into it, we asked Dr. Mynor Mendoza,Athletic Director at BCC, to shed some light.
“Everyone is required to do weekly testing, and though the process of testing is tedious,it is understood and accepted by students and staff,” shares Dr. Mendoza, who joined Barstow Community College three years ago and has been coaching athletes for over 16 years.
“We also require everyone to do a Daily Health Self-Check before coming to campus, and upon arrival ourstaff conducts a Health Check-in.”
“Staff and students are happy and excited to be back.”
The college also purchased masks and gaiters for student-athletes. These help to protect the athletes while practicing and has proven to be an appreciated “welcome back gift.”
Barstow Community College has taken numerous steps to ensure the comfort, confidence, and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and community as it prepares for a phased return of onsite classes in August and October, and a full reopening of campus in early 2022. This includes new air-handlers and air-purification systems as well as an app that assist with tracing and follow-up in the event any cases of infection occur.
