Suicide Prevention Training at BCC

Barstow, CA – The Barstow Community College (BCC) 2017 Leadership Academy is hosting a Suicide Awareness and Training event on April 26, 2017 at 6 pm in the BCC Performing Arts Center Lobby.

The current Leadership Academy at BCC is a select group of 10-12 college employees who volunteer for a place in the 9-month leadership program designed to build leadership skills (i.e.: networking, problem solving and decision making, dealing with conflict, leading change, communication, organizing and planning, and ethical leadership). Dr. Deborah DiThomas, Superintendent/President of BCC, and Clint Dougherty, Associate V.P. of Human Resources, are the co-chairs of the academy. Participation in the program is not limited to managers. It consists of a good mix of college employees and faculty from different departments, and at different levels and stages of their careers. The program emphasizes the fact that leadership roles exist at all levels of an organization, and that leadership skills are important in the day to day operation of the college.

Each year, the Leadership Academy participants are responsible for completing a group project of their own choosing. This year, the project is the Suicide Awareness and Training event that will highlight the warning signs of suicide and give participants multiple resources that can assist in suicide prevention. The training will be provided by Ahlam Axelrod, Marriage and Family Therapist, Intern, Registered Trainer of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and Maternal Mental Health Specialist at Victor Community Support Services. There will be opportunities to ask questions, and participate in the discussion about this important topic.

The 2017 Leadership Academy is encouraging everyone in our community to attend this event, so that more people will be trained and ready to “reach out a hand” to someone in need of help.
