Barstow Community College Named a Champion for Excellence

Excellence in Placement

Barstow, CA- Barstow Community College (BCC) proudly announces its recognition by the Campaign for College Opportunity, an organization focused on helping California students achieve the goal of attending college, for its dedication and commitment to providing students with equitable access to higher education.  Specifically, BCC was recognized as a top performer in the following areas:

·

100% of BCC students are supported to enroll directly in transfer-level English

·

100% of BCC students are supported to enroll directly in transfer-level Math

·

100% of BCC Latinx and Black/African American students are supported to enroll directly into transfer-level English

·

77% of BCC Latinx students enrolled in a transfer-level Math course successfully completed it within 1 year of their initial enrollment. This is the highest success rate for this metric among all California community colleges, and a full 10.6 percentage points higher than the second highest college.

Through the full implementation of Assembly Bill 705 (AB705), the landmark placement policy reform mandating direct enrollment into transfer-level English and Math with academic support to help students to be successful, BCC is leading the way in breaking down barriers to student success. By fully embracing the spirit of AB705, BCC has provided students with the opportunity to succeed at the highest level.

As a result of these achievements, Barstow Community College received an invitation to attend the annual installation ceremony: Excellence in Placement: Honoring Community Colleges Excelling in Equitable Course Placement for Students, which was held at the California Endowment in downtown Los Angeles on May 31, 2023.

During the installation ceremony, Susan Nylander, an English Instructor, and Dr. Peter Esperanza, a Math Instructor, proudly represented the BCC faculty. Their presence symbolized the recognition of their hard work. Both Nylander and Esperanza expressed their profound honor in having their contributions acknowledged, emphasizing that their work is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the BCC faculty in supporting their students. Additionally, Dr. Esperanza highlighted the faculty's deep-rooted "passion for innovation," which has played a pivotal role in delivering an exceptional education to the students of BCC.

These remarkable accomplishments would not have been possible without the tireless and dedicated efforts of the Barstow Community College faculty and staff.  For more information about BCC’s commitment to student success and implementation of AB705, please contact: Amanda Simpson, Director of Public Relations, Communication, and Marketing at 760-252-6727 or asimpson@barstow.edu.
