Debi O’Connell serves as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Manager at Barstow Community Hospital, bringing more than 28 years of nursing leadership and healthcare experience to the Barstow Community College Foundation Board of Directors. Throughout her career, Debi has held a variety of healthcare leadership positions, including Chief Nursing Officer and Emergency Department Director. Her diverse experience in clinical operations, executive healthcare management, and nursing leadership provides valuable perspective on strategic planning, workforce development, and the health and well-being of the High Desert community. Debi is passionate about the role education plays in creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and developing the next generation of healthcare professionals. Her career in healthcare has given her firsthand insight into the importance of accessible education, job skills training, and strong educational pathways in building a skilled and sustainable local workforce. She is particularly committed to supporting opportunities that help students translate their education into meaningful careers and long-term success. Beyond her professional responsibilities, Debi is deeply committed to public service and community partnership. She volunteers with the Southern California Mountains Foundation at fire lookout towers, working alongside fire and forestry services to support public safety. She also assists the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep by delivering water to remote guzzlers that help sustain local wildlife. Debi is also actively involved with several local recovery groups that provide free assistance to community members, including vehicle rescues, missing-person searches, and holiday events for local youth. Her continued involvement in these efforts reflects her belief in collaboration, service, and helping create a stronger and more connected community. Debi is honored to support Barstow Community College and its vision of being a hub of innovation and educational excellence for the California High Desert. She looks forward to bringing her healthcare leadership experience, community partnerships, and commitment to service to the Foundation Board. Through this service, Debi hopes to help advance student success, expand workforce development opportunities, and support the college’s commitment to providing equitable and accessible educational pathways for the diverse communities it serves.
