Special Programs & Services

Barstow Community College’s Special Programs and Services Department is dedicated to providing access and support services to students who are educationally disadvantaged by social, physical, or economic barriers.

Special Programs and Services offers services through the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE), California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs), Accessibility Coordination Center and Educational Support Services (ACCESS), 9 Line, Youth Empowerment Support Services (YESS), Veteran’s Education and Transition Support (VETS) and the Food Pantry.

Mission

The Department of Special Programs and Services provides access and support services to educationally disadvantaged students to overcome social, physical, and economic barriers and reach their academic, career, and personal goals by fostering an environment that promotes student success through independence and self-advocacy.

Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars to join the SPS staff for food, prizes, games, and two egg hunts on April 5th from 12:00pm-4:00pm in the K-Building! The egg hunt will take place at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. This is open to EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs students and their families only. Contact eops@barstow.edu for any questions.

We would like to cordially invite you to our End of the Year Celebration (Luau Theme)! As the semester comes to an end, we would like to celebrate you and all of your hard work! We invite you to attend and enjoy some free food, entertainment, photo booth and yard games! During the event, graduates may pick up their cap and gown and each graduate will receive an SPS medallion, certificates and stoles.  

Please make sure to RSVP by using the QR code below. You must RSVP no later than April 21st so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone.

Important Information:

  • The K-Building will be closed Wednesday, March 22nd from 9:30-11:30 due to a staff meeting.
  • If you wish to have your benefit cards mailed to you, you must fill out this form. Only students who live outside the Barstow area are eligible to have their benefit cards mailed to them. If you live in the Barstow area you must pick up your benefit cards in-person during business hours. 
  • EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs students get their graduation caps and gowns for free! Please fill out this form to request your free cap and gown!

  • Women’s History Brunch: There will be a brunch, presentation, a panel discussion and an opportunity drawing Tuesday, March 21st from 12:30 to 1:30 in the Black Box Theater on Main Campus. This count as a workshop for EOPS/CARE students! Contact studentlife@barstow.edu for any questions.

  • Staff Contact: You must meet with EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs staff, see staff below and click on the appropriate links to book an appointment or contact our office if you need assistance. Appointments are available in-person, via video, or over the phone.

Deadline: February 13th – May 5th

  • 2nd Counseling Contact: You have the option to meet in-person, over the phone or video appointment with SPS Counselors (Isis Fuentes, Lilia Franco, Michelle Colleoc, or Ed Palmer). As a reminder, meeting with General Counselors will not count towards this requirement. Two consecutive “no call, no show” appointments will count as a missed requirement. Contact us to book your appointment eops@barstow.edu.

  • CalWORKs Only! One (1) Career Focused workshop is required for CalWORKs students. You must complete the workshop form attached for every workshop attended to receive credit with the moderator’s signature. See below and attached for workshop dates/topics/times.

  • March Workshops: March is filled with workshop opportunities that include Black History Month events, LGBTQ Support Groups, SPS Group Counseling sessions and more! Please see the attached for more information. Pay close attention to which workshops will count for EOPS, CARE, or CalWORKs.

  • Summer Registration will be open April 3rd. Priority registration will not be available for Summer. Please feel free to come to the K-Building for assistance on April 3rd. The Summer class schedule can be viewed here.

  • We will have limited staff available on April 11th – 13th due to a conference. Please be patient with the staff that will be working those days.

  • The Transfer Fair will be Thursday, April 20th from 11:00 am-2:00 pm in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). There will be over 16 colleges and universities in attendance!
