Writing Center

The Writing Center at BCC is here to offer zero-cost guidance and instruction to students of all disciplines who need help with writing. We appreciate the different backgrounds and experiences that have given each student a unique voice, and we seek to provide an inclusive space where writers can learn compositional skills to promote personal expression in an academic setting. We will continue to strive for an environment where students are supported in line with the college’s values of equity, open communication, and accountability.

We often see:

  • students writing essays for different classes, including but not limited to English, Communication, History, Psychology, and Sociology

  • ESL and native English-speaking students that need clarification on assignment prompts.

  • students writing cover letters, college-application essays, and resumes.

  • students running into problems finding sources while conducting research.

  • students writing speeches and oral presentations.

Our writing center tutors can provide support no matter where you are in the writing process, including brainstorming and outlining ideas, finding sources for research, and drafting and editing papers. We will not proofread or edit your paper for you, but we can identify common errors and provide assistance in understanding difficult lessons or writing techniques. No matter your learning style or skill level, we offer direction to make you a stronger, more independent writer.

Our Directed Learning Activities (DLAs) are designed for you to navigate English lessons at your own pace, and you can book an appointment with a tutor whenever you’d like to go over the results and discuss the concepts.

Writing is a skill that develops over time, and our goal is to engage students to think about the different elements like organization, persuasiveness, style, analysis, and technique. You can always be proud of your writing if you are trying to learn and build awareness in these different areas. We are always trying to improve too, so if you have any comments are recommendations, we encourage you to share them in the survey below.
