Math Center

The Math Center is a zero-cost service provided by Barstow Community College that provides students assistance and supplement learning done in the classroom. The Math Center is open virtually and face-to-face at the TLSC. A math faculty member or a student tutor is always on duty to assist students with questions or concerns from their math class. Additionally, computers are available for students to access mathematical software or do work for an online math class. Students also have access to limited instructional videos and computer tutorial programs.

Math Center tutors cannot provide you with feedback on quizzes, exams, or other assessments. If you have questions about this, please email the TLSC staff in advance of your appointment.

Hours

The Math Center hours vary each semester and are subject to change.

During non-operational hours, students may use NetTutor for immediate assistance. NetTutor is locates on the bottom left of the TLSC Canvas Page.

Math Center Tutors

The Math Center hires a diverse group of tutors who have various educational backgrounds to meet students' needs. Tutors are students at Barstow Community College. All subject-specific math tutors are recommended by instructors and have successfully completed courses they support with an A or B grade.

We offer a variety of services to assist you:

Workshops

Faculty-led workshops and learning/conversation groups are small group activities led by an instructor or tutor. They are approximately 1-hour in length and are scheduled at specific times during the week. These groups complement and reinforce classroom instruction. At the end of the session, students who participated will receive verification for attending the group, which they can submit to their instructor as proof of completion.

Free Online Tutoring

We offer tutoring in many subjects. Students are allowed to meet with a tutor for 45 mins per subject per day.  Students can sign up for appointments in advance or attempt drop-in tutoring if a tutor is available for their subject area.

Directed Learning Activities (DLAs)

A DLA is an activity that students complete independently that complements and extends classroom instruction. Some courses require students to complete DLAs. After completing a DLA, students must review it with a tutor in order to receive verification. The DLA process, from start to review, takes approximately 45-60 minutes. You can find all of the DLAs currently available on the TLSC Canvas Page.

Prepare for your online appointments by doing the following:

  • Have questions ready for your tutor.

  • Prepare materials ahead of time, such as notes, textbooks, and homework.
