![]() The lab allows the teacher to interact one on one with each student... In the sciences we have an advantage due to the interactions possible in the laboratory. The lab allows the teacher to interact one on one with each and every student; you get to know the student and are able to better communicate with them. The epidemic exercise that Patricia Williams referenced in her “Profile” is an excellent example. One person in the lab is “infected” and through contact with other class members infects them. After interacting with a set number of classmates 3-4 times, about 75% of the entire class becomes “infected.” We use the exercise to demonstrate how easily it would be to spread an infection and then talk about the implications of world-wide travel and how a mobile society can transmit and spread disease.
