Barstow College Hosts American Solar Challenge

American Solar Challenge Logo

The American Solar Challenge visited Barstow College on the last leg of their cross country race. Each of these wonder cars is powered by the sun and is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 50 mph.  Teams from several prestigious colleges and universities competed in the race which followed the old Route 66 highway from Chicago to Los Angeles.

The first car arrived on campus late Saturday afternoon. Over the next five days, over twenty-five solar powered cars and their support staffs borrowed the Barstow College grounds to be used as home, repair shop and an oasis in the desert, while they waited for the continuation of the race. The Solar Challenge students seemed to be enjoying our campus, whether it was playing Frisbee on our lawns, frolicking in the sprinklers, or just relaxing in the quads.

On the morning of Wednesday, July 25th, the teams began leaving at 9:00am on the final leg of the race. The finish line is in Montclair, California. We wish them all success and safety for the remainder of the race.
