Barstow Community College Offering Chinese Culture and Language Class to the Public

BARSTOW— Barstow Community College will be a bit more international this summer with the addition of a Chinese language and culture class which is open to the general public.

This non-credit course will be offered by Dr. Zhenying Jiang. It is designed to help students with everyday conversation. They will learn greetings, getting and giving simple directions, shopping terms, telephone etiquette, chatting about the weather, how to order in a restaurant, seeking help and other topics.

The course will focus on Pin Yin, a Chinese pronunciation system, to learn practical conversation is varied settings. The program is supported by the Head of Education Consul for the People’s Republic of China through a grant of several textbooks.

The class will be offered from 9:00 to noon on Wednesdays, June 21 through July 26.  The cost is $120.  Anyone interested in the class can sign up through the college business office.  Materials for the class will be available after the class begins at the Viking Bookstore on campus for about $5.

Barstow Community College Callboard Performing Arts Club hosts fundraiser: Scavenger Hunt

BARSTOW—The Barstow Community College Callboard Performing Arts Club will host a scavenger hunt Saturday, May 13.  Open to the public with check-in at 10 a.m., the hunt will last two hours. This event is a fundraiser for the Callboard Performing Arts Club for future performing arts events and scholarships. 

The starting point will be at the Norman Smith Center on campus.  Items to be found will be located within the city limits of Barstow. There must be two people to a team and there may only be one vehicle per team. The cost is $7.50 per person. The team with the most points will receive a cash prize.

Phi Theta Kappa to Host Barstow Literacy Day at Barstow Community College

BARSTOW—In an effort to encourage greater literacy throughout the Barstow community, Phi Theta Kappa at Barstow Community College will give away donated books from the library and private donors.  The Literacy Day program will take place Thursday, May 11,11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Norman Smith Center on campus.  The giveaway is open to the public.

Hot dogs, sodas, and chips will be available for $1.50 for those who stop by during their lunch hour.  For more information, contact club adviser, Sean Connelly, at 252-2411, ext. 7234.
