TWO BARSTOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASKETBALL PLAYERS SIGN LETTERS OF INTENT

BARSTOW – Two members of the Barstow Community College men’s basketball team have signed National Letters of Intent to attend and play basketball at four-year colleges.

Travis Sobers, a 6-foot-5-inch point guard has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Sobers is a graduate of Green Valley High School in Henderson, Nev. He averaged 7.7 points a game for the Vikings and 2.2 rebounds. He had 66 assists and 41 steals in 25 games. Sobers graduated this month from Barstow Community College with an Associate of Arts degree.

Ryan Mathews, a 6-foot freshman guard has signed a National Letter of Intent with Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo. Mathews is a graduate of Legacy High School in Thorton, Colo. Ryan averaged 13.9 points while shooting 40 percent from the three-point range. Matthews was named First Team All-Conference for the Foothill Conference.

BARSTOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO HONOR LARGEST EVER GRADUATING CLASS

BARSTOW – Barstow Community College will honor its largest ever graduating class with a commencement ceremony on May 20 at 7 p.m. in the college’s gymnasium located at 2700 Barstow Rd. Roughly 632 associate degrees and certificates were earned by students.

The Barstow Community College class of 2005 valedictorian is Barbara Fogle, and the class salutatorian is Barbara Barnett. Both will make presentations during the commencement ceremony.
Brigadier General Robert Cone, commanding general of the National Training Center at Ft. Irwin, is the invited commencement speaker.

A reception, hosted by the Associated Student Body, will be held in the Norman Smith Center immediately following the ceremony.

BARSTOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE OFFERS SUMMER PAINTING WORKSHOPS
FOR COMMUNITY

BARSTOW- The Barstow Community College Art Program will be offering summer painting workshops for the community. The workshops will meet daily the week of June 27.

One workshop, designed for students in fourth through eighth grades will meet from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The second painting workshop is open to anyone age 15 and older, and will meet daily from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Both workshops will meet at the Desert Discovery Center on Barstow Rd. each day from June 27 through July 1.

The registration fee of $35, which includes all necessary painting supplies, must be paid by June 15 to the Barstow Community College Business Office located in the college Administration Building at 2700 Barstow Rd.

The Business Office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until May 20. Beginning May 23, the Business Office will be open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

BARSTOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE ANNOUNCES
WINNERS OF DESERT HERITAGE WRITING CONTEST

BARSTOW – Today, Barstow Community College announced the winners of its 20th Annual Desert Heritage Writing Contest.

Prizes were awarded for the best fiction, nonfiction, and poetry submissions for students in four grade levels – fifth and sixth grade, seventh and eighth grade, high school, and community college.
The entries were judged by Barstow Community College instructors, local high school teachers, and volunteers from area writing groups.

Organized by Barstow-area teachers in 1985, the Desert Heritage Writing contest recognizes local students for excellence in writing. Prizes are funded through donations from individuals, clubs, and college groups. Barstow Community College sponsors and contributes financial support for the contest.

This year’s winners were honored during an awards ceremony held at Barstow Community College on Saturday, April 23.

BARSTOW COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHOIR TO PERFORM SPRING CONCERT

BARSTOW – The Barstow Community College Choir will perform its spring concert Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Norman Smith Center located at 2700 Barstow Rd.

The choir will perform an eclectic collection of songs featuring American folk, multi-cultural, gospel, and classical music.

General admission is $4, and students pay just $3. Tickets can be bought at the door.
