BARSTOW
– Barstow Community College is expanding its creative education offerings with
the addition of its first full-time art instructor, Lewis Goldstein, MFA, ACTP.
Mr. Goldstein comes to Barstow from Portland, Ore. to expand the college’s art program. He will join the Barstow Community College faculty this August and teach drawing, design, art history and Photoshop, a computer graphics class. He has a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii in Sculpture and Ceramics and is an Adobe Certified Trainer in Photoshop.
Mr. Goldstein has taught at American Samoa Community College, The University of Hawaii Lab School, Pacific University and most recently, Portland Community College and St. Anthony Elementary and Middle Schools.
An accomplished artist, his sculptures and porcelain creations have been commissioned for clients in Portland, Ore., New York, Germany and Switzerland. His ceramics workshops have been taught worldwide. He has shown his work extensively and won a bronze medal for a pastel painting at the 2003, Leonardo Da Vinci Biennial Competition in Rome, Italy.
When asked about his new position, he expressed his goal to develop an art program for the community. “I want the art education offered at Barstow Community College to be relevant to the daily life of the students and the effective functioning of the community,” he says.
For example, he suggests that students in his new graphics art class could design and produce graphics for local businesses and organizations, thus serving the community and developing a portfolio. He’d also like to work with local establishments to display student art. “I invite students of all ages to enroll in the fun art classes we will offer this fall semester, whether you’re seeking college credits or not; and it doesn’t matter if you have any experience or think you are talented,” says Goldstein. “I will teach you how to draw and how to access your creativity, and feel free to let me know what art classes you’d like to see offered at the college.”
