PAL Thanksgiving Dinner

The Barstow Police Activities League sponsored a Thanksgiving dinner at Straw Hat Pizza East from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. last November 24, 2005. The event is organized for families who can’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner as well as those who have no families to celebrate Thanksgiving with.

Several Phi Theta Kappans contributed their time to serve Thanksgiving dinner. Lots of appreciation to Marcia Thompson, Laura Johnson, Cynthia Hayes, Alfred Phelps, Vincent Abeita, Marcus Otero, Melissa Olegario, and Norfrancis Olegario who volunteered during this very special time of year.

Clubs Unite to Earn Award

On October 31st, various members from the campus clubs Alpha Gamma Sigma and Phi Theta Kappa showed up to help the A.S.B. club decorate the Mardis Gras float. The A.S.B. club consists of approximately 15 members, and they had decided to use the theme of the parade "Children Are Our Future" as the center of the float. The judges apparently liked the way the theme was implemented because they gave A.S.B. the President’s Award for a job well done. The president of Barstow Community College and his wife, Dr. and Mrs. Brock, were among the group that rode on the float for the duration of the parade.

Transitions

This was a month of transitions as our club elected four new officers on November 24th. Norfrancis Olegario, who had already proven himself as Internal Vice-President, will now be V.P. of Scholarships and will be in charge of keeping club members informed of all information pertaining to such. Jessica Luna-Oliver will be the new Leadership V.P., organizing groups to attend leadership conferences. Monica Klein, V.P. of Fellowship, will endeavor to recruit new club members. The V.P. of Service position will be filled by Michael Pearson, who will be speaking with various businesses around town regarding fundraising opportunities.

While some members were transitioning in, some are preparing to say farewell. We want to say a big congratulations to Melissa Olegario who was just recently accepted to C.S.U. San Bernardino and will be transferring in January 2006. Kerry Swenson was also accepted to U.C. Santa Barbara and has already moved. These women were a big asset to our club and will be missed.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day

On October 27th, Phi Theta Kappa sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness Day to spread awareness about the causes and prevention of breast cancer. PTK’s booth was set up in front of the ASB office and student center from eight until twelve, and PTK members raffled off t-shirts and passed out information pamphlets from the American Cancer Society. The forty dollars raised at the information booth was donated to the American Cancer Society in order to help support its research efforts. Over one hundred pink ribbons, donated by Joann Garcia, were passed out and worn to raise consciousness about this potentially fatal malady.

Who’s Who in PTK: Mr. Bret Sage

Ever wonder who the instructor is who will require his students to write long, detailed essays on their Biology lab reports? Mr. Bret Sage is so passionate about his discipline that his license plate reads, "BIOSAGE."

Mr. Bret Sage is a common face to the Biology Department of Barstow Community College. He teaches Biology 2, Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Microbiology classes. He studied Biology at CSU Bakersfield (bachelor’s degree) and CSU Long Beach (master’s degree). Mr. Sage says that being a college instructor is one of the most wonderful experiences in his life even though it has ups and downs. "Seeing the light go on in someone’s head or hearing, ‘Wow, cool!’ during a lab are valuable beyond measure," he added.

Mr. Sage is also one of the devoted advisors of Beta Lambda Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Barstow Community College. "Being an advisor to PTK is rewarding and difficult," Mr. Sage commented. "The rewarding part is seeing the PTK students enjoying themselves and growing through the activities that we have put on, but it is difficult making the time to do the things for the club that I should be doing."

Aside from being an instructor and a PTK advisor, he spends time with his wonderful wife and charming two-year-old daughter camping. He also works with New Hope Village, a homeless transition shelter, where he is a trustee.
