A student speaker is selected to address the graduating class at commencement. Those who wish to be considered for the role should review and complete the Student Speaker Application Packet. The form for the student speaker may be downloaded by choosing the link below:

Criteria for Eligibility

The eligible student must have completed 40 units at Barstow Community College by the end of the semester preceding the semester of graduation.

The student must have petitioned for graduation that year and be a graduate attending the ceremony.

The student must be enrolled in the current academic year of graduation.

The commencement speaker is required to be an honor student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.

For those students receiving degrees in multiple semesters, the GPA of the most recent semester of graduation shall be used in determining eligibility.

Selection Process

The Student Speaker Selection Committee reviews student speaker applications on the merit of their leadership and involvement at Barstow Community College, and the quality and relevance of their proposed commencement speech. Finalist will interview with and deliver their commencement speech to the committee. The committee’s recommendation is submitted to the VP Student Services and President/Superintendent for final approval.

  • Director of Student Life and Development
  • Commencement committee faculty representative
  • Commencement committee classified representative
  • Commencement committee ASG representative or designee of ASG President
