Community College consists of a combined 4 men’s and women’s
varsity sport teams including baseball, men’s and women’s
basketball, and women's softball.
GOALS
It is the goal of the Barstow Community College
Intercollegiate Athletics Program to represent the best interests
of the educational mission of Barstow Community College, as well
as the many communities of greater Barstow and the High Desert region
in spirited athletic competition with other community colleges,
providing competitive opportunities for both men and women students
in a wide variety of sporting endeavors.
It is also the goal of the intercollegiate
athletic program to:
1. Ensure all student-athletes are given
maximum opportunity and support for achieving their academic goals;
2. Provide the best possible environment
to enable each student-athlete to compete to the fullest extent
of his or her capabilities;
3. Establish support systems enabling student-athletes
to develop into well-rounded, responsible, successful and mature
individuals; and
4. Encourage student athletes to assume
leadership roles both on campus and in the community.
GOVERNING AUTHORITIES
Barstow Community College is a member in
good standing of the Community College League of California’s
Commission on Athletics (COA). As authorized by the state legislature,
the Education Code provides the COA with the authority to establish
the rules and regulations to administrate the intercollegiate athletic
activities of the California Community Colleges.
The California Community College system,
which is composed of 72 districts and 108 campus sites, annually
enrolls nearly 2.9 million students and employs over 70,000 citizens
of the state. Nearly 25,000 student athletes participate annually
in intercollegiate athletics at California’s Community Colleges
and the COA oversees nearly 100 regional and state-final events
that produce champions in 20 men’s and women’s sports
each year.
Barstow Community College is also an affiliated
member of the Foothill Conference, which provides league competition
for the program. Along with the Vikings, the FC includes Antelope
Valley College (Lancaster), Chaffey College (Rancho Cucamonga),
College of the Desert (Palm Desert), Mt. San Jacinto College (San
Jacinto), Rio Hondo College (Whittier), San Bernardino Valley College,
and Victor Valley College (Victorville).
It should be noted that a majority of student athletes participating
in California Community College programs transfer to a four-year
college or university to continue their academic and athletic careers.
These students are required to meet the eligibility standards of
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and or the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
SEASONS OF SPORT
The Barstow Community College Intercollegiate
Athletic Program recognizes two distinctive seasons of sport, which
coincide with the semesters of the academic year. The fall sports
include men’s and women’s basketball.
The spring sports include baseball and softball. Men’s and
women’s basketball is recognized as the one sport that spans
the semesters, though the season begins in the fall.
Barstow College has been a strong influence
among California Community Colleges for over three decades.
It has always maintained an exceptional faculty and student system
that emphasizes attainment of the educational and vocational goals
of our students.
Athletics at Barstow College is an important
part of the educational process. The athletic department is
committed to providing a variety of inter-collegiate sports that
will provide inter-conference, invitational, sectional and/or
state competition. Barstow College Viking teams have been
fortunate to be State and Division Champions in years past and are
committed to achieving continuous excellence.
