Academic Placement

What is an Academic Placement Test?

The test assesses a student's reading comprehension, English and mathematics skills. The Academic Placement Test generates a profile of the student's skills, which along with other factors (such as the student's past experience, grades, etc.) a counselor can use to advise the student on the best entry into a sequence of courses to meet her/his individual educational goals. The Academic Placement Test is a component of Matriculation.

Who needs to take an Academic Placement Test?

The Academic Placement Test is required for the student planning to enroll in a math, English, or reading class and also for the student planning to earn an Associate Degree or certificate.

Academic Placement Test exemption is granted to:

a. Students who submit recent (within three years) scores from an assessment instrument approved by the State Chancellor's Office or from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.

b. Students who have completed college course work in reading, English and mathematics with a "C" grade or better. Transcripts must be on file and evaluated to determine accurate placement.

c. Students taking non-credit courses only.

What do I need to do in order to take the Academic Placement Test?

Students must have submitted the enrollment application at Barstow Community College and have a photo I.D. (Driver's License, Barstow Community College I.D. card, Passport, High School I.D. card, Resident Card, Military I.D.). If the student does not have a Social Security number, a temporary college number is issued when the enrollment application is processed.

Do I need to make an appointment to take the Academic Placement Test?

Appointments are not required to take the Academic Placement Test, except during certain periods of the semester. The Computer Lab Center provides support for Matriculation by providing the ACCUPlacer Academic Placement Test to all new students. Call 760-252-2411 x7288 for dates and times the Computer Lab Center is open.

How long does it take to complete the Academic Placement Test?

Allow approximately two hours to complete the test. There is no time limit and students are encouraged you to take their time.

When will I know the results of my Academic Placement Test?

Test scores are available immediately. The student will need to meet with a counselor for test score interpretation and placement into classes.

How often can I repeat the Academic Placement Test?

The Academic Placement Test may be retaken one time in a subsequent semester. However, if the student enrolls in or completes an English or math class, the Academic Placement Test may not be retaken again for the purpose of skipping a prerequisite course. Academic Placement Test scores are valid for two years.

Anything else I should know?

Yes, food, beverages, electronic devices such as calculators, cell phones, head sets, radios, etc. or children are not allowed in the Computer Lab Center. Please do not bring them with you.
