From assessing students skills to identifying career goals and selecting appropriate classes, the Counseling Department offers the specialized services students may need for success at Barstow Community College and beyond.
Students with economic, social and language disadvantages receive positive encouragement through the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) where additional services include: peer advising, tutoring and assistance with books and supplies. Students with disabilities receive support from staff in the Office of Student Support including: specialized assessment and diagnosis of learning disabilities; computer access; academic, career and personal counseling designed for the student living with a disability and academic accommodations. Career Assessment and AdvisingThe Transfer and Career Planning Center specializes in assisting students in choosing a college major and/or career goal. Interests, aptitudes, personal values, academic skill levels, and personality strengths must be considered in establishing career objectives. The Barstow Community College counselors will assist you in this process. Transfer PlanningA Barstow Community College counselor can provide the most current information to ensure a smooth transition to four-year colleges and universities. The Barstow Community College Transfer and Career Planning Center has catalogs, applications, articulation sheets and other resource materials to assist students with academic transfer planning. College Success CoursesBarstow Community College offers College Success Courses that are designed to help students achieve success in college. Topics include managing stress, improving communication skills, developing creativity, exploring the world of work and identifying values, interests, and personal strengths for career decision making. Courses include Orientation 1 - College Success and Psychology 5 - Career and Life Planning. Personal CounselingBarstow Community College’s Counseling Department is staffed with professional counselors who offer individual counseling for students who want assistance in coping with the problems they face in everyday life. Issues relating to self-esteem, anxieties, relationships, and academic performance are common obstacles for college students. If a student's situation requires longer term therapy, referrals can be made to off campus resources. To make an appointment, call (760) 252-2411 x7236. Academic AdvisingPlanning is an important step in achieving academic success. Each semester, all students are encouraged to meet with a counselor prior to registration for academic advising, course selection and setting up a student educational plan. International Student AdvisementInternational students are required to make an appointment with the international student advisor prior to admission to Barstow Community College. For more information, please see International Students Admissions. New Student OrientationAll new students should attend orientation. Orientation will provide students with information regarding the educational programs and support services offered by Barstow Community College. Students will also learn about registration procedures, assessment results, and receive assistance in selecting their first semester courses. Fall 2008: For new students in the Barstow/Ft Irwin area, orientation presentations will take place on main campus and at Ft. Irwin during the week of August 4 – 8, 2008. Day and evening sessions will be available. Please speak with a counselor for more information. An online version of the orientation is not available at this time for our distance education students. You are encouraged to have regular contact with a counselor via phone, (760) 252-2411 ext. 7351 or through e-mail, bcounselor@barstow.edu. We expect to offer online orientation in the near future. Appointment and Walk-In CounselingCounseling appointments may be made in person at the Admissions & Records counter or by calling (760) 252-2411, ext. 7236. Ft. Irwin students should call (760) 380-3905 for an appointment. Phone appointments are available. Walk-in counseling is also available for quick questions Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Note: Barstow Community College is closed on Fridays in June and July. Students may also email quick questions to bcounselor@barstow.edu. Students with questions involving educational planning, degree or certificate petitions, or other counseling questions requiring more time, will be directed to schedule a counseling appointment.
